Tax Free Shopping in Jamaica
Jamaica is an attractive shopping destination for duty-free, tax-free items. There’s a wide selection of jewelry, watches and gemstones designed for visitors to the island.
Tax-free shopping can be done in international areas like airports and on-board airlines and passenger ships. More recently, a bill was passed by the Jamaican parliament which allows for outbound duty free shopping at In-Bond stores across the island. In tourist towns such as Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston, famous In-Bond duty free stores like Bijoux and Swiss Store can be found. The most popular items are jewelry, perfume, watches, crystal, leather goods and liquor such as Jamaican rum.
These prices are significantly cheaper than prices in the US and UK, with unique, original merchandise made available. Once buyers intend to take the items outside of Jamaica, the host country or destination determines the duty allowance each passenger is allowed as a limit before incurring charges.
In Montego Bay, shops can be found at the Sangster International Airport, the ‘Hip Strip’ or Gloucester Avenue, the Shoppes at Rose Hall, the City Centre, Half Moon Shopping Village and Whitter Village. Hundreds of engagement and wedding rings, with fine cuts and top-of-the-line gemstones are on display in brightly lit showcases. Stores that can be found in Montego Bay are Tropicana Jewellers, Tajmahal Duty Free Store, Casa de Oro, Bijoux and Swiss Stores.
“Once you go you know,” is often the case for many visitors to the island. Only then is it possible to discover the savings before saying farewell to Jamaica.
Ocho Rios has several options in shopping areas such as Soni’s Place and Ocean Village, especially on busy cruise ship days. Stores like Casa de Oro, Colors Jewellers and House of Diamonds can be found in Ocho Rios, as well as Tajmahal Shopping Centre. Other stores are adjacent to the cruise ship port in the town.
In Negril, Norman Manley Boulevard has duty free bargains at the Times Square Mall. Here, cigars, perfume, jewelry, watches and leather are available in stores like Colors Jewellers, Tropicana and Casa de Oro.
Kingston, of all resort towns, has large jeweler stores and multiples branches of Swiss stores and Bijoux Jewellers. The Norman Manley International Airport also has duty free stores for shoppers leaving the island.
Duty free shopping is an affordable luxury experience in Jamaica. It gives visitors the chance to obtain valuable merchandise whether they’re here on vacation or stopping by on a cruise ship.
