Track and Field
Usain Saint Leo Bolt is Jamaica’s Olympic Sprint Champion and the current world record holder for 100m and 200m. Not only does the country boasts a former record holder, Jamaica is also known for dominating major track meets, relays and championships, making it a competitive nation. Athletics are a big deal in Jamaica; the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Boys and Girls’ Championships is one of the most attended events each year which sees top high schools competing for the titles.

A Jamaican will always shout “Goal!” when his side scores! From professional and amateur football to street matches, Footballis a highly regarded sport, especially among the male population. The country has seen the rise of many Leagues and Cups, with football Associations as popular competitors for the goal. Many young players have gained contracts to play for reputable clubs across the world.

Jamaica has produced some of the world’s most famous Cricketers such as George Headly, Courtney Walsh, Chris Gayle and Michael Holding. The famous West Indies Cricket team has also benefitted from the participation of many Jamaicans throughout its years.

Said to be one of the fastest growing sports in the island, Basketball has provided several world-class athletes. Most notable is Patrick Ewing. Despite challenges, there are over 100 teams now involved in the High School League.

Netball is popular among Jamaican women, and is a sport emphasized in many High Schools. The Jamaican ‘Sunshine Girls’ have participated in Netball World Championships each year since it was founded in 1963. The team has ranked third in the world behind New Zealand and Australia.
