Charles Town Maroons

Jamaica Portland Buff Bay

Charles Town is the home of Captain Quao, military strategist for the Windward maroons, a signer of the Peace treaty with the British in June 23, 1739. This is a quiet hamlet about two (2) miles north of Buff Bay in Portland. Most of the families there can trace their ancestry back to the original maroons although with time some non-maroon families have taken up residence there. Charles Town rests on just under 1,000 acres of maroon community lands which is governed by the Maroon Council under the leadership of Col. Frank Lumsden. The Treaty of 1739 is still being recognized by the independent Government of Jamaica and entitles the Maroon Community to: Legal control over the acreage
