We all fantasize about that fantasy dream cottage home on a beach on an island in the Caribbean. What you may not know is that it already exists at Whistling Bird in Negril, Jamaica. You may not be the actual owner but you will feel like you’ve discovered your own vacation home. As you arrive the friendly staff is there to help you with your bags and walk you to your cottage. The wooden door opens and you step into a welcoming spot that immediately feels like home and will be for as long as you’re there. Natural cut stone meets rich warm wood throughout, even in the walk in showers meant to feel like a rainfall, all capturing the essence of island living, with each cottage named for a tropical bird. There’s an overhead fan and mosquito screens but since comfort is key, modern amenities are included, like flat screen TVs with multiple channels for your viewing pleasure awaiting those moments when you just want to kick back and chill and air conditioning to make sure that you only enjoy as much of the tropical heat as you wish.
The cozy and unique octagonal shaped one bedroom cottages are nestled amongst lush tree lined paths next to bigger two and three bedroom cottages. All open out to pathways of bamboo bridges and powdery white sand which lead you towards the gentle sound of the sea. As much as you think you’re prepared, that first glimpse of the shifting blues of the water will still take your breath away as you step out from under the shady canopy of trees to a seemingly endless stretch of white sand beach in either direction.
Suddenly, the dream is a reality, there you are, on a beach in paradise, your biggest decision is whether to swing lazily in the hammock under the shade of the trees with a cold beer in hand, get a relaxing massage on the beach or grab a float and head out to bob sleepily on the sea. You’ll still work up an appetite for a delicious dinner, even if the only work you’re putting in is on your tan, don’t worry, just let the staff know beforehand and they’ll prepare it for you. If you’re looking for an immediate quick fix there’s hot coffee and cold drinks at the bar and porridge and tasty soup to be had just at the entrance to Whistling Bird.
Negril has always had a natural vibe, with a rich bohemian past and is still known as the Capital of Casual. The creators of Whistling Bird fell in love with what Negril is all about and chose to make sure that they kept the same feeling people have enjoyed since the 1970s when others discovered this part of the island. Not only do the cottages encapsulate the feel of nature but even the location speaks to the original way of enjoying Negril.
Set in the centre of the famous seven mile stretch of white sand, so many things are in easy walking distance from the front gate. Laid back restaurants, intimate live performance venues and even Negril’s famous Jungle Night Club are all close by. And for anything a little further away like cliff jumping at Ricks Café or a visit to the local craft market, just ask, because by now everyone’s on a first name basis.
And when you’re done exploring, you’ll head back to your little home by the sea, and yes, even if it’s just for a fewdays, or a few weeks, your dream is now your reality.
