Medical Marijuana and the Benefits of the Growth of the ‘Ganja’ Industry

Jamaica has long been associated with all things ganja and ‘weed’ related, but before now it has been heavily associated with the idea of chilling on a beach with Bob Marley playing in the background for visitors or as an avenue to a deeper spiritual connection for those of the local Rastafarian theology. It has been a constant draw for those who seek either experience.

From easing pain and nausea for cancer patients, to offering respite for anxiety and sleep issues, the myriad of benefits of this miracle plant are poised to become a leading product both for use at home and for export. Whether it is from hemp as a construction material, to CBD beauty products and of course for its healing properties, proper applications of ‘ganja’ are getting the greenlight from the country’s industry leaders.

Jamaican Industry Leaders Endorse CanEx Jamaica Business Conference & Expo 2019

CanEx Jamaica Business Conference & Expo 2019, set to take place at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, September 26-28 has been strongly endorsed by Jamaica’s Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Agriculture, Audley Shaw, JAMPRO president Dianne Edwards, and Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica president, Howard Mitchell.

President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, Mitchell, who delivered the keynote address at the CanEx Jamaica 2019 on Wednesday, September 4, urged the Jamaican government and private sector not to corrupt or pollute the island’s indigenous ganja strains.

“Let us have a clear idea of what it is we produce, what belongs to is, and don’t let anybody come and take it away,” said Mitchell.

Jamaican Minister of Industry, Commerce and Agriculture, Audley Shaw, said that that Jamaica cannot afford to be left behind.

“(CanEx Jamaica) is an important feature for all of us because as entrepreneurs, it will enable us to engage and get involved in this fast growing global industry,” said Shaw.

Meanwhile, JAMPRO president, Dianne Edwards, said Jamaica is poised to capitalise on the global medical cannabis industry with the aid of events such as CanEx, which is able to attract high calibre participants such as former Mexican president Vicente Fox, Cam Battley, Bruce Linton, and Steve De Angelo, who are some of the most influential leaders in the global cannabis industry.

Jamaica’s Cannabis Licensing Authority has already issued 44 marijuana licenses and 288 conditional approvals since it was established in 2015.

“JAMPRO supports conferences like CanEx, where through consistent delivery of a high quality product, you are able to attract world-class keynote speakers and subject matter experts ...who are serious about the growth and development of the cannabis industry,” Edwards said.

CanEx Jamaica founder Douglas K Gordon said that the cannabis industry has the potential to change people’s lives.

“It would be a travesty if we were not able to collaborate and move this industry forward. Empowering people who have lived with huge income disparity the opportunity to go out there and earn their ticket …is something that should not be overlooked,” he said.
