Ocho Rios is a lively coastal town on Jamaica’s north coast.
It is known for its mix of natural wonders, adventure activities, and family-friendly attractions.
Ocho Rios was once a sleepy fishing village.
However, it has evolved into one of Jamaica’s most visited tourist hubs - a regular stop for cruise ships that draws thousands of visitors each year.
And while there’s plenty of information out there about what to do, here’s what they should tell you about Ocho Rios.
Getting there
If you’re flying into Montego Bay, the drive to Ocho Rios takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes along the scenic North Coast Highway.
From Kingston, it’s about a 2-hour drive via the Edward Seaga Highway.
Private transfers, car rentals, and route taxis are all available, depending on your comfort level and budget.
More than photo ops
Bamboo rafting on the White River is a peaceful way to enjoy Jamaica’s rivers.
And yes, it's a family-inclusive activity.
You’ll float along on a hand-crafted bamboo raft while your guide navigates the current.
It’s calm and quiet, with the chance to sip fresh coconut water or get a limestone foot rub.
Hidden gems abound
The Irie Blue Hole is often described as one of Jamaica’s most beautiful hidden gems, and for good reason.
This series of deep natural pools and small waterfalls is tucked into the hills, offering a chance to swim, jump, or just take it all in.
Guides are there to help, and if you or your kids aren’t strong swimmers, they’ll offer life vests.
It’s a fun way to cool off — no water park needed.
Dunn's River Falls caters to all ages
You’ll hear a lot about Dunn’s River Falls and for good reason.
It’s a 960-foot waterfall that visitors can climb from bottom to top.
But what they don’t always mention is that you don’t have to climb to the top.
There are several points along the trail where you can hop in or exit, which is great for families with younger kids or anyone who may not be up for the full trek.
There's also a beach at the base of the falls, so you can enjoy both the waterfall and the ocean in one visit.
Live out your childhood dreams
Are you looking for adventure?
Mystic Mountain offers a little bit of everything — from a scenic gondola ride to the top of the mountain to bobsled rides inspired by Jamaica’s Olympic team.
There’s also a zipline course (called the canopy tour) and a pool with a water slide.
It’s one of the few attractions that offers adrenaline and relaxation in one place.
Bali-like swings in Ocho Rios
If you’ve ever seen photos of people swinging over scenic views in Bali, you’ll be happy to know you can get that experience in Ocho Rios.
Some local tour providers now offer “Bali-style” swing experiences, where you or your kids can soar over gardens, rivers, or mountain views — safely strapped in, of course.
