What to do in case of a medical emergency in Jamaica

We know medical emergencies are probably the last thing on your mind while planning a vacation getaway to Jamaica.

But knowing what to do just in case something serious happens can give you peace of mind and help you feel confident and safe while exploring the island.

Jamaica has several well-equipped hospitals, responsive emergency services, and helpful resort staff who are used to supporting international visitors.

So if an emergency does arise, preparation will help everything go smoothly.

Call 119 for immediate help

If you or someone you’re with needs urgent medical attention, whether it’s a sudden illness, a serious injury, or anything that feels life-threatening, the first step is to call 119, Jamaica’s national emergency number.

You’ll be connected to a responder, whether it’s an ambulance, the police, or the fire brigade.

Operators are trained to assist callers quickly, and help will be dispatched to your location.

If you're at a hotel, notify the front desk or concierge right away.

Most resorts have emergency protocols in place and will take care of contacting local services and making arrangements to get you the help.

Visit the nearest hospital

Jamaica has both public and private hospitals, with more advanced facilities concentrated in towns like Montego Bay and Kingston.

If you’re in Montego Bay, you’ll likely be taken to Hospiten Montego Bay or Baywest Wellness Hospital.

These private hospitals are well-equipped to handle emergencies for visitors staying in the resort areas.

In Kingston, visitors can receive emergency care at Andrews Memorial Hospital.

Medical evacuation

Jamaica’s hospitals are prepared to treat a wide range of medical situations, but in rare cases, like a major trauma, complex surgery, or advanced care needs, doctors may recommend transferring the patient to a hospital in the U.S. or Canada.

This is known as medical evacuation, and while it may sound intense, it’s a common international protocol when specialized treatment is unavailable locally.

With a solid travel insurance plan, medical evacuation can be arranged smoothly and efficiently.

Once a doctor makes the recommendation, your insurance provider steps in to coordinate with an air ambulance service and the receiving hospital abroad.

Jamaican healthcare professionals are used to working with international providers and will do everything possible to ensure a seamless transfer.

No one hopes to need emergency care on holiday, but it’s reassuring to know that if something serious happens, you won’t be navigating it alone.

So while you’re packing your beach hat and sandals, it’s worth taking a moment to double-check your travel health insurance, store the 119 emergency number in your phone, and locate the nearest hospital to your accommodation.
