Born on July 25, 1946, Rita's journey into the world of music began long before she crossed paths with the charismatic Robert Nesta Marley during her teenage years.

Now, decades later, Rita Marley, a living legend, continues to leave an indelible mark through both her music and her tireless philanthropic endeavors.

Alfarita Constania Anderson

Her stage name "Rita" is a shortened version of her birth name, Alfarita Constania Anderson.

Raised by her aunt

Young Rita spent a considerable number of years living with her Aunt Viola in Trench Town, Kingston, after her parents' separation.

Aspired to be a nurse

Initially aspired to be a nurse and attended the Bethesda School of Practical Nursing.

Became a child champion with the Lord's Prayer

Young Rita won the "Lannaman's Children's Hour" talent show with her rendition of Mario Lanza's "The Lord's Prayer. 

This was one of her first public displays of her singing talent. 

Her first trio was not I-Threes

During her teenage years, Rita Marley, alongside her cousin Constantine Walker and their friend Marlene Gifford, co-founded a musical group known as the Soulettes.

It was through this group that she crossed paths with her future husband, Bob Marley who spent some time coaching the young singer on vocals and the record-making.

Member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church

Rita Marley practices her faith within the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, where she holds the baptismal name Ganette Mariam, which means "Paradise of St. Mary."

Adopted 35 children

Through her Rita Marley Foundation, the Reggae matriarch adopted 35 children in Ethiopia and supports various humanitarian causes.

She has six biological children, several grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
