Shericka Jackson: Jamaica's next sprinting sensation

By now you've probably picked up the buzz surrounding Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson.

In 2023, she solidified her status as a double world-leading sprinter; clocking an impressive 21.71 seconds in the 200-meter event at the July World Athletics Championships and 10.65 seconds in the 100-meter event during the local trials a few months prior.

But Jackson's journey reads like a true Cinderella tale because, at one point in her life, she never believed she could run at such incredible speeds.

She was considered one of the slower runners as a student-athlete.

So, what changed?

Here's a glimpse of the incredible story of Shericka Jackson - Jamaica's rising sprint sensation.

From turtle to world leader

In her earlier years, Jackson wasn't the revered sprinter we know today.

In primary school, she struggled to even break into the top three during her school's sports events.

Her speed was often humorously compared to that of a turtle.

The turning point

However, everything changed in her final high school year.

Jackson committed herself to track and field, working tirelessly to enhance her skills.

She credits her track coach for recognizing her potential and motivating her to achieve faster times.

Sprinting sensation emerges

Fast forward to the present day, and Shericka Jackson has evolved into a sprinting sensation.

Her performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics caught the attention of the world; becoming a standout in the 400-meter event.

She secured a bronze medal in the 400 meters and further proved her prowess in relay events, winning silver, gold, and bronze in the 4x400-meter relay.

Transition to shorter sprints

Under the guidance of coach Stephen Francis in 2021, Jackson shifted her focus to shorter sprints.

Impressive performances at the Jamaica Olympic Trials, including a 10.77 seconds 100 meters and a 21.82 seconds 200 meters, earned her a spot at the Tokyo Olympics.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Jackson claimed a bronze medal in the 100 meters and continued her success at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

She secured silver in the 100 meters and a gold, setting a championship and national record in the 200 meters.

Making history

Shericka Jackson's achievements extend beyond individual events.

With her historic gold in the 200 meters at the World Championships, she became the first athlete ever to win medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters.

Her excellent track record has led to her receiving several awards and nominations including the World Athlete of the Year, becoming one of five women finalists.
